Lore
Under this past month, I’ve been working on building the world lore for our next game.
For this brand new IP there is a lot to build and connect together. Everything needs to make sense and have a reason to exist. Compared to the other games we’ve made so far, this narrative world is going to be a lot less structured. While working on the details it is becoming a balancing act to give enough information in a non-linear way. Everything need to make sense, but I don’t want to spoon feed the story in a boring way. I’m trying to include a lot more environmental story telling to fill out the overall atmosphere of the world.
My plan is to let the Player find a lot of information on their own, so that they build up the lore themselves and discover secrets or hidden information as they go. In that way they should be making their own story. All of this means there’s a lot to make and integrate, subtle and more concrete as the game progresses. Including choices and consequences that will change the overall narrative, is yet another challenge I’m trying to plan out.
It will be a lot later in development before we can really judge how the balance of the lore dump will be. If we’ll need more, less, or a different spread of the information will have to come later, either way I’m trying to make as many different options for us to be able to test out.
Where we stand today I’m very excited and happy with the progression of the lore we have. With each new addition the story is becoming clearer and new ideas are forming. I’m also considering the extent of the mystery that I’m building within the world, and the possibility of adding multiple ARG elements! Right now I’m still testing things out, but I really want it to have a healthy amount of detective work for the Player to make the world come to life, and hopefully give a satisfying story for the audience to experience!
